The mood at Manchester United is described as ‘quite gloomy’, with most employees feeling ‘disheartened’ by the club’s situation, according to journalist Samuel Luckhurst.
The Red Devils have faced a challenging 2024/25 season both on and off the pitch, and are seemingly on track for their lowest-ever finish in the Premier League.
Ruben Amorim’s team currently sits in 14th place in the league with 11 matches remaining, although off-field issues once more took center stage last week.
United announced additional layoffs, intending to reduce 200 positions in a bid to ‘restore the club’s profitability’, and Luckhurst notes that the recent job cuts have adversely affected staff morale.

After 250 job cuts over the past year
Luckhurst, reporting for the BBC, disclosed that personnel at United have become more worried after 250 job reductions in the last year.
“It’s pretty miserable and I think that the majority of the staff are quite demoralised at the state of the club and I think that’s been the case for the past year with 250 redundancies.
“Last year there were going to be 200 redundancies. This year you have people who decided to leave before the redundancies were announced and as far as the supporters are concerned, Jim Radcliffe is reviled at the moment.
“He is well and truly bracketed with the Glazer family, who have been the owners for nearly 20 years.”
United supporters have harshly criticised Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s first year at the club, with his cost-cutting initiatives being a particular source of worry. In their most recent move to dramatically cut costs, United has closed their staff canteen and raised ticket prices in addition to laying off employees.
The club has lost more than £300 million over the last three years, and this month they revealed a £27.7 million loss in their second-quarter financial reports. Erik ten Hag and his coaching team were fired, costing United £14.5 million, including £4.1 million for the appointment and subsequent dismissal of former sporting director Dan Ashworth.
