After losing to Fulham at home in the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon, Manchester United’s season is still in a shambles, and if his team is to advance further the following season, Ruben Amorim must make a big decision.
Under Erik ten Hag, United had a difficult start to the season, finishing in the bottom half after the second game. Since then, they have only managed to move into the top half once, under Amorim, but that came after a run of just one victory in six games, which included a late comeback against Manchester City in mid-December. Rasmus Hojlund is largely to blame for their lack of goals, which has caused them to win just three of their last eleven league games and finish comfortably in the bottom half.

The Dane was acquired by United for £72 million at the beginning of the previous season from Serie A team Atalanta. Although he had a strong debut season at Old Trafford, he hasn’t been competitive all season. He has struggled greatly under both Ten Hag and Amorim, scoring just two Premier League goals in 22 games. This season, United’s biggest failure in the top level has been a lack of goals.

The youthful talisman’s last goal came via a brace in a 2-1 Europa League victory over Viktoria Plzen on December 12th, and the loss to Fulham represented an astounding 18 games without a goal. It must be acknowledged that United’s forwards have received comparatively poor service this season; yet, 18 games without a goal is far from satisfactory for a Premier League team.
As fellow Danish youngster Chido Obi-Martin was brought into the game, Hojlund’s dismissal from Sunday’s match against the Cottagers was greeted with applause. With the same thing happening against Everton, it seems like the end is near for the struggling star, who is reportedly “infuriating” the supporters with his lack of production.
Despite missing the game-winning penalty at the conclusion of the shootout, Joshua Zirkzee has been playing better than him. If he can score goals frequently enough to earn starts, the Dutchman may even be trusted to lead the line similarly to Hojlund.
